Refugee Claims

Refugee protection claims in Canada and appeals of negative decisions.

If you fear returning to your home country and would like to seek Canada’s protection — or you want to appeal a negative decision — we are here to help.

Refugee protection claims

People in Canada can claim refugee protection if they fear persecution in their home country because of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Protection may also be available where there is a personal risk to life, of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment, or of torture, and the authorities at home are unable or unwilling to protect the person.

Claims made in Canada are heard by the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) of the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), Canada’s largest independent administrative tribunal. We help you prepare your claim, your evidence and yourself for the hearing.
